Elanco South Africa was established in 1964, the new company was responsible for major innovations in the years that followed. As a branch of Lilly‘s global animal health division, ELANCO marketed and distributed products and services that improve animal health and, with that, the performance of the poultry, beef, pork and dairy-farming sectors in South Africa. Some 50 years later Elanco has grown from strength to strength, and currently is viewed as a leader in the animal health sector in South Africa.

In recent years Elanco has embarked on a rapid expansion drive, including a number of strategic acquisitions. These include Janssen Animal Health which added a Companion Animal portfolio to Elanco, Chemgen feed enzymes which complement the poultry and swine portfolios and AgriStats which extended Elanco‘s capability to livestock production technology solutions and benchmarking . More recently Elanco has added key vaccine portfolios via the acquisitions of Agrilabs and Lohmann Animal Health. As a result of the Lohmann acquisition, Elanco acquired Immuno-Vet Services, a business with a 20yr track record of unparalleled service to the South African poultry industry. Elanco has acquired Novartis Animal Health - this acquisition was completed in January 2015.

Upon completion of these acquisitions Elanco will be the #2 animal health company globally, a substantial presence in both companion and food animal with an offering to customers that includes vaccines, feed additives, therapeutics, production enhancers, bio-security and Elanco Knowledge Solutions (EKS).

Whilst slow to start, Elanco has rapidly expanded into Sub-Sahara Africa in recent months and is engaged in various Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects across East Africa. Driven by the Elanco WHY, namely ENOUGH, the SA team is passionately engaged in collaborating with customers to address the challenge of food security across SASSA.
