Eli Lilly and Company ("Lilly") is responsible for and committed to properly handling all personal information processed either in connection with your application for employment with Lilly or on an unsolicited basis in accordance with applicable law. Lilly recognizes the importance of protecting your personal information and respects the privacy of visitors to this website.

This Privacy Notice describes the types of personal information Lilly collects or generates at the Lilly website, currently located at ("the Site"), from applicants for vacant positions ("Applicants") as well as users who submit personal information on an unsolicited basis ("Unsolicited Users"), how Lilly may use the personal information and with whom Lilly may share this information. The Privacy Notice also describes the measures Lilly takes to protect the security of the personal information as well as how you may reach us to update your contact information or ask us any questions you may have about Lilly's use of your personal information. The Privacy Notice is applicable to both Applicants and Unsolicited Users.

How Lilly uses your Personal Information

Through the Site, you may be asked to voluntarily provide personal information that will be used to identify or locate you, such as, but not limited to, your full names, physical address, telephone numbers, e-mail address/es, educational background, and other similar personal information. If you provide us with personal information for purposes of your application for employment with Lilly, Lilly will accept that you have voluntarily provided us with such personal information. The personal information you provide will only be used as part of Lilly's employment application process, in the case of Applicants, and for purposes of compiling a database of personal information supplied by Unsolicited Users and Applicants who may not be employed by Lilly and for no other purposes. The database may be used by Lilly to contact any person whose personal information appears on the database in respect of any employment opportunity at Lilly. The personal information on the database will be retained by Lilly for a period of two years from the date on which the personal information is supplied to Lilly by an Applicant or Unsolicited User, as the case may be. You may refuse to provide certain personal information to Lilly, but this may restrict us from considering you for employment opportunities.

Please be aware that Lilly is not entitled to use your personal information for any purpose other than those purposes set out in this policy.

You understand and agree that your personal information may be transferred to the United States, and hosted on servers managed by various third parties. Your personal information is only accessible to authorized individuals within Lilly's head office in the United States, and authorized individuals at other Lilly Affiliates. An "Affiliate", for purposes of this Privacy Notice, includes a subsidiary of Lilly, a holding company of Lilly, any other subsidiary of that holding company as well as any entity (whether incorporated or not) which directly or indirectly is controlled by Lilly, any entity controlling Lilly or any entity that is controlled by the aforementioned entity (i.e. under common control of Lilly). A person or entity shall be deemed to control another entity if it possesses, directly or indirectly, the power to direct, or cause the direction of, the management and policies of the other entity, whether through ownership of voting securities or partnership interests, representation on its board of directors or similar governing body, by contract or otherwise ("means of control"). Without derogating from the generality of the aforegoing, a person or entity shall be deemed to be in control of another entity if they hold more than 50% of any one of the means of control of such other entity.

Sensitive Data

The Site will only collect and process personal information revealing racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, trade-union membership, and data concerning health, sex life or criminal convictions with your explicit, opt-in consent, and only to the extent necessary for an application process. If you provide us with personal information of a sensitive nature, you agree that you do so voluntarily and with your consent to provide us with such personal information.

How we share your Personal Information with others

Lilly collects, processes and transfers personal information through automated data processing systems, as well as in paper-based and or manual processes. All data processing and data transfers are subject to confidentiality, privacy and security safeguards as set out in Lilly's Global Policy on Privacy and Data Protection, which is available for inspection at In each instance, every Lilly Affiliate that receives your data has agreed to process the data only in accordance with the Global Policy on Privacy and Data Protection and in terms of this notice.

Although personal information may be transferred to Lilly Affiliates and third parties located in countries that have no adequate privacy laws, adequate safeguards by Lilly have been put in place to ensure your privacy and their compliance with Lilly's Global Policy on Privacy and Data Protection and in terms of this notice. Other than for purposes of processing under Lilly's responsibility, your personal information will not be disclosed to non-Lilly entities, unless Lilly is required to do so by applicable law, regulation, legal process, governmental request or in the context of a merger or acquisition or similar transaction. In addition, Lilly may disclose any information when Lilly believes, in its sole discretion, disclosure is necessary or appropriate to prevent physical harm of whatever nature or in connection with suspected or actual illegal activity.


By providing personal information to Lilly, the Applicant or the Unsolicited User, as the case may be, does so voluntarily and consents, at the time of submitting his or her personal information to Lilly, to Lilly processing such personal information. In addition, the Applicant or Unsolicited User, as the case may be, consents to the transfer of his or her personal information from South Africa to an Affiliate in any other jurisdiction.


Areas of the Site that collect your personal information use industry standard secure socket layer encryption (SSL); however, to take advantage of this your browser must support encryption protection (found in all Internet Explorer releases since version 3.0 and all other popular browsers). Lilly uses both its own and third party regional hosting centers, and these centers have security precautions that provide for industry standard protection of your information. These regional sites place your information in databases that are protected by, for example, security firewalls and intrusion detection software.
